Best Time to Visit Tanzania Overview

Tanzania can be visited throughout the year, but the best time depends on your travel goals. Some travelers want the Great Migration, others want fewer crowds, lower prices, Kilimanjaro trekking, Zanzibar beaches or family-friendly safari weather.

For classic wildlife safaris, the dry season from June to October is usually the most popular period. Wildlife is easier to see because animals gather near rivers and water sources, vegetation is thinner and roads are generally easier.

Quick answer: June to October is the best all-round safari season, while January to March is excellent for Serengeti calving season.

Tanzania Safari Seasons

Tanzania has two main travel seasons for safari planning: the dry season and the green season. Both can be rewarding, but they offer different experiences.

Best Time for the Great Migration

The Great Migration is a year-round movement, but the location of the herds changes by season. Your safari should be planned around the area where the herds are most likely to be during your travel month.

  • January to March: Calving season in Ndutu and southern Serengeti.
  • June to July: Western corridor and possible Grumeti movement.
  • July to October: Northern Serengeti and possible Mara River crossings.
  • November to December: Herds move back toward central and southern Serengeti.
Important: Migration timing is influenced by rainfall, so exact movement can vary each year.

Best Time by Destination

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti is excellent year-round, but the best area changes with the migration. Central Serengeti is reliable most months, while northern and southern areas are more seasonal.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro can be visited throughout the year. Dry season offers easier viewing, while green season brings beautiful scenery.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is strongest from June to October when animals gather near the Tarangire River, especially elephants.

Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara is good for short visits year-round, with green scenery and birdlife during wetter months.

Zanzibar

June to October and December to February are popular for beach holidays, honeymoons and safari extensions.

Best Time for Lower Prices

If you want better value, consider traveling outside the busiest safari months. April, May and parts of November can offer lower accommodation rates and fewer vehicles in popular areas.

The trade-off is that rain may affect roads and wildlife can be more spread out. However, green season safaris can be beautiful, especially for photographers and repeat travelers.

Planning Tips

  • Book early for July, August, September and Christmas season.
  • Choose northern Serengeti for river crossing season.
  • Choose Ndutu and southern Serengeti for calving season.
  • Choose Tarangire in dry season for elephants.
  • Combine safari with Zanzibar for a balanced holiday.
  • Ask your operator to match your route with your travel month.
