Why Visit the Usambara Mountains?

The Usambara Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, an ancient chain whose long geological isolation has allowed unusually high rates of species endemism - plants, chameleons and birds found nowhere else on Earth. This is a genuinely different kind of Tanzania trip from a savanna-based itinerary among our Tanzania safari tours.

Within the range, Amani Nature Reserve protects some of the richest surviving rainforest, with guided trails suited to birders and hikers rather than vehicle-based game viewing. The surrounding highlands are also home to colonial-era tea estates still in operation today, adding a cultural dimension to the hiking.

The Usambara Mountains sit in northeastern Tanzania, a separate region from the main northern safari circuit around Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and are often paired instead with coastal stops near Zanzibar given their proximity to Tanga.
